The piece looks like a sleek, spendy piece of custom furniture, but it's really just three inexpensive stock cabinets surrounded by pieces of oak plywood. Not satisfied with simple shelves? Wait until you see the clever ways the cabinets can be tricked out.

The two large cabinets do the heavy lifting here, while this side's all business. The adjustable shelving accommodates a printer, laptop and other essentials. By adding a simple piece of sheet metal the interior of the door turns into a handy memo board.

The narrow center cabinet is the perfect spot to stash a phone and other gadgets. Turn it into a charging station by just drilling a hole in the back to corral cords and gain access to an outlet.

The second side can serve up everyday tableware, or store extra special-occasion entertaining items. A few pieces of slim trim, and some more metal sheeting, make a pocket for the mats to slip right into. No wasted space, and that's the whole idea here, one piece doing double duty.
