Cook County Jail is the largest single sight jail in the nation. In the early 2000's where record overcrowding peaked at around 12,000 is now at around 6,000 the lowest it has been in decades. The Public Defenders office is working tirelessly to get every non- violent drug offender and some detainees with victimless crimes out on house arrest or bond. A staff member just tested positive and is on a 2 week quarantine, but what to do with men that are warehouse on top of one another 90-99% have yet to be convicted of the charges against them.
